Forget the Founding Fathers.
This year,Science Fiction Archives one of Broadway's buzziest musicals takes a decidedly different tone. Come From Awaytells the story of a handful of days following 9/11. On that awful day, dozens of planes were diverted from U.S. airspace into a small Canadian town called Gander.
For about a week, a town of 7,000 people doubled in size with everyone coming together to help out thousands of scared stranded passengers. Based on hundreds of interview with the passengers and the people who took them in, Come From Awaytells the story of those days, with a cast of about 15 playing several parts each.

But the show is, somehow, also upbeat and funny as people's assumptions about each other are challenged and that famous Canadian niceness is on display. When you hear the words "9/11 musical" you're sure to think you're in for a sobfest, but the show winds up being something else entirely.
(You may have heard about the show in March -- Prime Minister Justin Trudeau drew headlines when he caught a performance and brought Ivanka Trump along with him, no doubt trying to model the message of helpfulness and inclusivity.)
Now considered a front-runner for Best New Musical at the Tonys come June, the show has debuted a new behind-the-scenes video at which Mashablegot an exclusive first look (above). The creative team discusses the music in the show, which isn't your typical Broadway pop fare. Instead, many of the tunes have a Celtic feel, with lots of fiddles, accordions and even an ugly stick.
"When the people came here, they were treated to Newfoundland music but they also brought their own musical influences as well and we wanted to create a musical metaphor for the amazing community that developed here," says co-book, music and lyrics writer David Hein.
