Ever since The Busty Coeds vs Lusty Cheerleaders (2011)Force Awakensleft us (and Rey) at the edge of a literal cliff with legendary Jedi Luke Skywalker, we've been waiting with bated breath to know more about their first meeting.
According to a new Entertainment Weeklyinterview, though, we shouldn't hold our breath for the hero we once knew. And audiences won't be the only one's reeling. Rey, the new Jedi in training, has to cope with the disappointment of meeting her hero and finding him ... lacking.

He dove into the significance of his first few words to his new, hopeful student Rey:
“The fact that Luke says, ‘I only know one truth. It’s time for the Jedi to end…’ I mean, that’s a pretty amazing statement for someone who was the symbol of hope and optimism in the original films.” ...
“When I first read it, my jaw dropped,” the actor says. “What would make someone that alienated from his original convictions? That’s not something that you can just make up in an afternoon, and I really struggled with this thing.”

Rey actress Daisy Ridley said the cold welcome she receives from her would-be Obi-Wan Kenobi was even enough to make her character long for the warm hospitality of Han Solo.
Explaining her character's mental state in the upcoming film, Ridley said that the death of her previous father figure Han, combined with the abandonment issues from her backstory, makes Skywalker's unwelcome reception even more hurtful.
Because, "Now [Han's] gone, and instead I’m with this grumpy guy on an island who doesn’t want me here."

He appears to be coping with some PTSD.
And one random girl he doesn't know wielding a lightsaber won't make him forget all that and go, "'Oh, s—, yeah, of course I’ll get back into the action,'" Ridley said.
"But doeshe not know her?” Hamill teased, asking the question millions have been screeching into the void ever since the final scene of The Force Awakens.
The EWinterview hints that Rey and Skywalker's backstories are connected, and that The Last Jediwill revolve around them learning to become not only one with the Force again, but with each other too.
For writer-director Rian Johnson, the most important aspect of tackling this new, grizzled version of Skywalker came down to explaining his disappearance from the Resistance:
“The very first step in the writing of this was figuring out why he’s on that island,” Johnson says. “We know that he is not a coward. He’s not just hiding because he’s scared. But we also know that he must know his friends are in danger. He must know the galaxy needs him. And he’s sitting on this island in the middle of nowhere. There had to be an answer. It had to be something where Luke Skywalker believes he’s doing the right thing – and the process of figuring out what that is and unpacking it is the journey for Rey.”
For his part, Hamill attributes his character's self-exile to a loss of confidence in his own abilities following his fatal mistake with Kylo Ren:
“And he is betrayed, with tragic consequences. Luke feels responsible for that. That’s the primary obstacle he has to rejoining the world and his place in the Jedi hierarchy, you know? It’s that guilt, that feeling that it’s his fault, that he didn’t detect the darkness in him until it was too late.” ...
“I think he probably looks out on the horizon and wishes that he could be more effective, could be what Obi-Wan wanted him to be,” Hamill says. “But life is imperfect and without conflict there is no drama. Believe me, you’re going to see a lot of conflict in The Last Jedi. That is for sure.”
So are we gearing up for a new, iconic, "I am your father" scene between Rey and Luke in the upcoming film? We'll have to wait until Dec. 15 to find out.
