It turns out that Amazon's new Echo Show isn't just a hyped-up,petting eroticism touchscreen-touting version of the company's speaker product, it's also a stealth smart TV, too.
Jimmy Fallon, host of The Tonight Show, revealed a new Echo Show feature on Wednesday that gives users the ability to stream on demand video, including Fallon's daily monologue, via the device's video screen.
SEE ALSO: Why the Echo Show could be Amazon’s most disruptive productThe feature is called Flash Briefing and it should already be familiar to anyone who's received audio news updates on the Amazon Echo, with the Echo's audio version of Flash Briefing.
With the Echo Show, you can ask the device to show you your Flash Briefings and the device will play short videos from various news sources like CNBC, Reuters, CNN, CBS News, NBC News, Fox News, and now The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.
Fallon showed off how the function works via Twitter on Wednesday.
This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed.
To enable the function, you just go into the mobile Alexa app, go to Settings, select Flash Briefing, and then add the daily Flash Briefings you want. As with most Echo Show functions, the "play" feature is enabled via voice, all you need to say is "Alexa, what's my Flash Briefing," or "What's the news?" If you've already started a Flash Briefing and want to skip to the next video from a different content channel, you just say "next," and the next video Flash Briefing will start playing on the screen.
Although the video content is short form, this is a clear signal that Amazon has designs on media (video and audio) optimized for its Echo ecosystem. When will we see Echo Shows in the aisles of Whole Foods streaming Amazon News, interspersed with commercials for items in the store and online, thus completing the picture of Amazon serving as the distributor of... well, everything?
