It's fair to say that Deadpool 2didn't exactly go the way trailers suggested it would.
We met X-Force,Watch Young Woman Bai Jie and then promptly said goodbye to X-Force. But then, before the credits rolled, it became clear that X-Force is a big piece of the immediate Deadpool roadmap.
SEE ALSO: 'Deadpool 2' is the gayest superhero movie yet. That's not saying much. It's confusing! But the reality is that Deadpool 2did a lot of setup work for the future of the character -- and possibly the Marvel mutantverse -- at the movies. Let's review.
Bedlam, Shatterstar, Zeitgeist, Vanisher, and Peter -- dear, sweet Peter -- we hardly knew you.
Deadpool 2did this pretty incredible thing where it spent a bunch of time assembling a super-team and then, moments into their first big outing together, promptly killed all but two of them. But they're not the X-Force that matters.
In Deadpool 2's closing scene, we see Wade joined by Domino, Cable, Negasonic Teenage Warhead and her girlfriend Yukio, Dopinder the taxi driver, Colossus, and Firefist. The suggestion is that this bunch is our new X-Force -- though Deadpool 2's time-twisting credit sequence suggests that both Peter and Zeitgeist are still alive as well.
It's also worth noting: Wade's movie love interest, Vanessa, is based a the comic book mutant, Copycat. In the comics, Vanessa Carlysle/Copycat is a mutant shapeshifter and a key early member of X-Force (sort of). We know that Morena Baccarin's Vanessa is still alive, and it stands to reason we haven't seen the last of her.
There isn't any X-Force team configuration in the comics that looks like the one Deadpool 2 introduces. Hell, several of these characters don't even existin the comics. But that's the whole "Deadpool at the movies" schtick, right? Toy with your expectations, and then blow them up with a nuclear device.
In the end, the "who" matters less here than the "what." X-Force is to the X-Men what the Punisher is to superheroes that don't murder criminals in cold blood: It's a harder-edged super-team. Even in the comics, the lineup hasn't ever stayed the same for long; only the brutal tactics.
If you're going to expand Deadpool's corner of Fox's Marvel universe, X-Force is a fitting way to do it.
It was an easy thing to miss if you're not tuned into the comics, but the name of Cable's daughter-from-the-future -- Hope -- is a significant reveal.
In the comics, Hope is among the most powerful mutants in existence. The first mutant born after the events of the continuity-shaking House of Mstoryline, Hope has the ability to both mimic and manipulate the powers of other mutants. She's also served as a host for the Phoenix Force.
We'll have to wait and see how much of this carries into future movies from Fox's Marvel mutantverse. But Deadpool 2leaves the Hope thread dangling when Cable, satisfied that his future-family is safe, decides to remain in his past.
Fox is also developing a Dark Phoenix movie for a potential 2019 release. It's said to be an X-Men-focused movie, with Jean Grey under the influence of the Phoenix Force. But X-Force exists in the same universe, and is likely to factor in as well. It's not a huge leap from there to imagine Cable's daughter joining the party in some way.
In the end, Deadpool 2introduced Cable and revealed his daughter's name as Hope. That's not an accident or a coincidence.
Deadpool 2low-key leaned into making a couple of canonical additions to the broader cinematic universe that exists under the Fox-licensed Marvel Comics umbrella.
First we have Juggernaut, the hulking Icebox inmate who teams up with Firefist to cause some havoc. After the duo breaks out of prison and returns to Firefist's school, we learn in a quick throwaway line that Juggs is the brother of Professor Charles Xavier.
That's a relationship pulled directly from the comics. Cain Marko, the man inside the Juggernaut armor, is Professor X's stepbrother. The two have a very long and convoluted history, one that crosses over with many other Marvel storylines. But now that the relationship is movie-official, it's likely we haven't seen the last of Juggernaut.
There's also a reference in Deadpool 2to a place called "Mojo World." That's where Shatterstar (R.I.P.) said he's from.
The comic book version of Mojo World is difficult to sum up. It, and the Mojoverse it's a part of, is ruled over by Mojo. He's a member of an alien race called the Spineless Ones, whose society was shaped largely by what was learned from Earth's TV broadcasts.
Mojo presides over Mojo World's TV industry, and he wields all the power and influence as a result. He's also obsessed with the X-Men, and has captured its members on more than one occasion.
Shatterstar's "Mojo World" reference in Deadpool 2may have just been a sly bit of fan service, but the inherent weirdness of Deadpool movies so far leaves more than enough room for a visit to Mojo World in the future.
