"A diamond of this size is completely unexpected for this part of the world and marks a true milestone for diamond mining in North America," Dominion wrote in its statement.
Unearthed in October by Diavik Diamond Mine, the company describes how the "abrasion markings on the stone’s surface attest to the difficult journey it underwent during recovery, and the fact that it remains intact is remarkable."
Unfortunately for those of us hoping to see this history-making diamond under our Christmas trees, it's apparently not being sold in its whole, rough form. After being studied for its unique geological properties, it will be cut into a number of smaller pieces instead.
It's too early to determine the exact monetary value of the 552-carat whopper. But when the last record-breaking 187-carat diamond was cut down into two smaller pieces, they sold for a total of $1.3 million.
So Santa better be raking in some serious dough if he wants to make good on our Christmas list this year.
