On Thursday, sex sins eroticism Sam Bee caught the attention of far too many people when she called the president's daughter Ivanka a "feckless cunt."
On Friday, she earned a tweet from our "First Amendment" president too, who called for the show's cancellation.
Frankly, this is one of the nicer things Sam Bee has said about the Trump administration. And American culture is all the better for her willingness to go all in. Of all the late night hosts, Bee has always been the president's most astute critic -- harsher than Trevor Noah, woke-r than Jimmy Kimmel -- offering him all the mercy he and his administration deserve, which is to say, none.
SEE ALSO: Sally Field has a mic-drop response to Samantha Bee and Ivanka TrumpI'm genuinely not going to engage in a debate about whether Sam Bee should have used the word "cunt," because it's too stupid a conversation to have. Maybe she should have used it, maybe she shouldn't. I promise you, I don't care. I, like you I'm hoping, am far more interested in exploring the satanic origins of the policy Bee was attacking, which involves separating parents from their childrenat their border to dissuade them from seeking asylum.
Bee chose to target Ivanka because the president's daughter shared a tone deaf photo of herself hugging her child at the same time this story broke. The hypocrisy was devastating, the policy, spectacularly cruel. So Bee opted to use the most acrid words she could find. And thus a Twitter war was born.
This too will pass. More importantly, Bee's language is entirely in line with the general tenor of Full Frontal, which has run on outrage fuel for the past two years because -- get ready for it -- outrage isthe healthy moral response to our current political trauma.
In the past, Bee has called Trump a "brain-damaged baboon” and a “foul-mouthed tit judge.” She accused the president's top xenophobe advisor of being a product of "10,000 spiders who really made a commitment." After Sessions' testimony, she tore open the president for his emotional outburst on Twitter:
"The guy whose master starts every morning rage-tweeting conspiracy slander while working a well-done steak out of his colon does not get to call anyone hysterical," Bee said.
She's also been one of Ivanka's fiercest antagonists, reminding us that just because Ivanka resembles a real human being doesn't mean she has humane qualities, including intellectual independence and, you know, baseline empathy.
Ivanka is not "your secret progressive buddy," Bee said. "Anyone with a dad knows they have invincible old-man-opinion strength!"
Nearly all late night hosts have had their moment in the takedown spotlight during the Trump era. But no one has done it more savagely and memorably than Samantha Bee.
Take Kimmel, whose on camera outburst about his newborn son probably did more to save Obamacare than anything or anyone else (on television, at least). We're lucky to have a man express such raw compassion publicly, especially in the age of Trump. Night after night, he used the right facts to do the right thing and help the people who needed it the most. Applause.
But as former host of The Man Show,Kimmel was later to wokeness than Bee and most late night hosts. Like Bee, Stephen Colbert, Seth Meyers, and Trevor Noah have all been strong critics of Trump.
Though occasionally they try to build bridges where none should be built. Colbert invited fascism fluffer Sean Spicer to perform at the Emmys. Noah had a strangely warm interview with Tomi Lahren. Meyers and John Oliver are both excellent, but lack the lacerating bite that Bee possesses.
Jimmy Fallon, meanwhile, is fluffier than Trump's hair. And James Corden ... c'mon. This dude sing-songs his way through a rape joke. You complete the critique.
As a host on TBS, Bee will never command the ratings Fallon or Colbert do. At times, she has defied the odds and risen to the number one late night show among the coveted 18-34 demographic. She's doing just fine -- for cable.
But Bee's greatest public service to the American people has been her anger: serious, persistent, and always targeted at the right people in power. At a time when the most prominent woman in government is CIA Director and torture apologist, Gina Haspel -- someone who curates people's rage in the most perverse and sadistic ways -- we need someone like Bee to show us rage's better half.
Her anger is our own. And if it's not yours yet, well, then, start listening.
