The world of competitive online shooting games officially has battle royale fever.
EA didn't reveal many details about Battlefield V's battle royale mode but it will ostensibly fall in line with the popular model set forth by PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds and Fortnite: Battle Royale in which a whole bunch of players enter a map and fight until there's only one player or squad left standing.
This is new territory for the Battlefield series, which has traditionally done team-based multiplayer where there is no lack of resources for players. Battlefield Vchanges that up in a big way with a new focus on resource scarcity.
Even in regular multiplayer matches, players will spawn onto the battlefield with only a limited supply of ammo and other gear. To load up, they'll have to visit supply stations installed, by other players, at home bases and capture points. It's easy to see how this new gameplay quirk could factor into a Battlefield Royale mode.
Traditionally, Battlefield multiplayer modes have handled up to 64 players on one map, usually with some kind of objective for teams to complete or defend. Meanwhile the most popular battle royale games will put 100 players on one map. There's no word on the number of players EA's twist will support.
Despite the lack of details about Battlefield V's new foray into battle royale, the word "vehicles" was mentioned, which could mean that the mode will contain the kinds of tanks, planes, and other war-ready combat vehicles that fans have come to expect in regular Battlefield matches. Fans can also expect the same kind of destructible buildings that they know and love which means you aren't necessarily safe hiding out in a house.
More information about Battlefield 5and its new multiplayer mode will come out during Xbox's press conference Sunday.
